Produce an idol: A simple, pain-in-the-butt job
The next dayâ¦
Saikawa and I left SIESTAâs residence in the morning by car. It was Yui Saikawaâs private car, and her private chauffeur was behind the wheel.
âStill, weâre leaving really early. The programâs not till this evening, right?â I asked. Saikawa was sitting in the back seat next to me, gazing at her phone.
Today, she was scheduled to perform in a live music program. Weâd gone into hiding to protect Saikawa from the media, but they hadnât been able to cancel that live broadcast. Now I was going with her.
âI have a lot I need to do beforehand. After all, I am a super idol.â Saikawa put her phone away, then gave a big, feline yawn.
âYou look really tired. Didnât get much sleep yesterday?â
âNo. After you and I spoke, we girls talked far into the night.â Saikawa let her head fall onto my shoulder and closed her eyes. Man, this idolâs public and private faces are so different⦠Actually, I canât believe how much she relaxes around me.
âBy the way, what were you girls talking about?â
âMm, how much you suck, mostly.â
âI shouldnât have asked.â Well, if theyâd bonded with each other by tearing me down, that was fine⦠Maybe?
âThey couldnât come with us today, though?â Saikawa sat up. I wasnât sure whether she was uneasy about having me be her only escort, or whether she was just curious.
âYeah. We have Bat to worry about too.â
With Seedâs help, Bat had broken out of jail. We didnât know what he wanted, but there was a decent possibility that heâd go after Siestaâs will on Seedâs ordersâand after Natsunagi, who was succeeding her as ace detective. Based on that assumption, Iâd decided to keep Natsunagi in the safest place possible and have Charlie guard her.
âUm, Mr. Bat, wasnât it? Isnât SIESTA dealing with him now?â
âYeah, she should be, butâ¦â As a matter of fact, Iâd gotten a text from SIESTA early that morning. I read it to Saikawa.
â âLeave this to me. Kimihiko, you just watch over Yui Saikawaâs decision.â End quote.â
I didnât really understand what she was trying to say.
Not âprotectâ herââwatch overâ her.
Did it mean she didnât expect anything from me in a fight? I mean, yeah, I hadnât been able to do much over those three years, just watch over Siesta from the shadows, butâ¦
âI see. SIESTA knows you very well, doesnât she?â Somewhere in there, Saikawa had gotten out her phone and was gazing at it again. âWatch over me. Thatâs perfect for a concert-lurker-wannabe-boyfriend-geek like you, Kimizuka.â
âSaikawa, you think Iâll forgive you no matter what you say to me, donât you?â
âYes, I do.â
Oh. She does? She doesnât even sound sorry.
âAfter all, no matter what happens, I believe youâll always be on my side.â
âYou definitely put your foot in your mouth; donât try to flip it around and act like that was a positive exchange.â
âHey, it looks like weâre just about there.â She forcibly derailed the conversation. Thatâs a move I use a lot too, though, so I couldnât really call her on it.
